I recently read a fab book called 'If A Pirate I must be..' - the true story of Bartholomew Roberts.

Well worth a read if you can get your paws on it. It says that although they were law-breaking scoundrels they were very egalitarian [every pirate got equal shares of the loot] and very democratic [they all voted on matters of importance].

And they had a 'code of honour' and avoided drinking, gambling and women [!!] as these might have sowed dissent in the ranks. Although some pirates were better at keeping to these rules than others, if you know what I mean..

And they were very 'inclusive', as the Africans they captured from slave ships were soon given equal status on board the ships, as soon as they had shown their loyalty.

Reminds me somewhat of the Sopranos ..

Gobsmackingly, The Wurzels are still much loved down here in Devon - I once cast aspersions and was put very quickly in my place!

I saw the wurzels live once. Are they still around, or even alive?

Johnny Depp, yup. I come over all weak at the knees whenever I watch PotC!

Sadly, I sound Cornish whenever I read Mac's pirate books.

Shiver me timbers!

Arrrr, as it be past Talk Like a Pirate day, I'll be answerin' yer comments in English ...

Gill, it's great fun!

Brom, I knew you would!

Rilly, I can imagine ...

Anon, a romantic view - like I have of highwaymen. I always fancied being a highway(wo)man..

Mopsa, anoterh rounds of 'I am a cider drinker'? ;)

Rilly, I believe they are going strong! (Must be all that cider)

MB, the British branhc of talk like a pirate day was doing stuff for Marie Curie, so perhaps it was to do with that?

St, one never needs an excuse to gaze at Cap'n Jack Sparrow! The tail, I fear, is still stained ...

NMO, we should get Johnny to shiver our timbers, arrrrrr!

I'm no good at it but would love some lessons from Johnny Depp; don't want to appear too available but am available anytime!

M&M - did you really say the 'British' branch of talk like a pirate... is this an international phenomena...wonder what it sounds like if you talk like a pirate in French or Spanish.??!!
Glad to hear your grey girl's better

Is that you? If so, I like the beard. Mind you, the horse will have to go. Unless you can get it to perch on your shoulder and say 'Pieces of eight'.

It seems our cider drinking friends are making something of a comeback. Can't believe it's 30 years since they released that I've Got a Brand New Combine Harvester song! They're really nice guys. I once got to go backstage with them at a Young Farmers gig - ah, the glamour!

I really wouldn't mind if Jonny Depp spoke pirate to me. in fact he wouldn't even have to speak.
I do find him strangely attractive.
