Little luxuries

My shower is on strike. Apparently it’s just too big and powerful for the fuse box and it won’t work again until a new one is installed. As I’ve said before, I am a bath person; but I have a lot of hair and I like to rinse the conditioner off with the shower.

Instead, I am pouring beakerfuls of water over my hair to rinse it. It puts me in mind of my teenage years before we had a shower fitted. I must’ve been about 14 or 15. We had central heating installed around the same time: the radiators were an utter luxury. They meant the end of freezing mornings dressing with the airing cupboard door open, socks and knickers warming on the tank. It was also the finish of the feathers and fronds left by Jack Frost’s fingers on the windowpane; of warm, white breath blowing a window within the window to see if it had snowed overnight.

Until last year, I spent almost five years in a house with an open fire and no central heating. I coped fine with two oil filled radiators that plugged into the electricity socket. My current home has storage heaters but I am too mean to switch them on. Instead, I heat the room I’m in and put on an extra jumper. I think my generation was the last to grow up without central heating as the norm.

Where I live, there is no mainline gas. I remember approaching a gas cooker with trepidation when I first left home. Now I would love a gas cooker. I’d like the option of gas central heating too. But what I really, really want is my shower back. It can be grim up North, you know …

I'd have to move if there was no heating here. And we have the most useless shower, supposed to be a power shower but lacks the power.

There not good but better than a beaker, how about those shower thingies that fix to your taps?

I grew up without central heating too, in fact I didn't live in a home with central heating until I was 22! Now I wouldn't be without it although since having cavity wall insulation a couple of years ago, we haven't needed to turn the thermostat any higher than 17C and it is always turned off whilst we are in bed.

Hope your shower is mended soon.

Think how much you will appreciate it when it does get fixed!

what people don't realise about all that mention of frosty fingers and seeing if it's snowed over night is you were talking about august M&M. People don't realise how grim it is up north, sigh

I remember pre central heating living too well. Cold lino (before lino was a hip and trendy flooring option....) and sliding one's toes between icy sheets was like a trip to Antarctica. And all that damp washing that steadfastly refused to dry, hung limply around fires. Yuk. It was grim in mid Warwickshire too.

I'm sure you have a male shower. "Too big and powerful for the fuse box," indeed. I think we've all heard that one before.

I think I'd up the horse power in the fuse box and stick with the meaty shower - who wants a pathetic dribble of a morning? And central heating. What's that? I'm with you M&M - stick on another sweater and pull on the Ugg boots. Bet you don't get colds very often.

If it isn't a new shower I'm surprised about the fuse. If its lasted a while, it may not be the shower that's at fault.

Know where you are coming from re heating. I was brought up in a cottage with only two coal fires.

Sweeping them was FUN!!!

Ah CJ, put on another jumper!

Thankyou IMB, I am awaitign teh elctrician to say when he'll be able to do it - he has been an assessed - the shower has blown the fuse box and new cable to the show is also required

True Gill...

True Rilly!

Mountainear, I think grimness gives a gal character!

Ooo er, OM ...

Mopsa, I am confident of normal service being resumed shortly

Brom, accoridng to the elctrician it's the shower - it has blown 2 fuses and now the bit of the fuse box that controls it...

MB, i'd love a woodburner and an Aga, but an Aga wouldn't fit into my kitchen

We only got our shower two years ago - couldn't stand the pong of three hormonal boys any longer - they were all far too lazy to run the bath. But still haven't got central heating - I do but dream. Tis truly grim up here.

oh I remember no central heating. I once dressed so close to my electric bar heater I burnt my hair and had an orange patch on the top of my head for weeks. I'm still an extra jumper girl, who needs heating? Pull yourself together child! My children are going to hate me. My Mum came from oop North, it must have rubbed off on me.
Hope shower gets better soon...

Being menopuasal is MUCH cheaper than any kind of heating.

Urgh poor you, I couldn't imagine life without gas central heating or hot water (would be too much like going back to my childhood!) and I too love to rinse the codnitioner off under the shower.

Goodness I remember the pre-central heating days too. My sister and I would have dressing races on the landing, which for some reason that escapes me was the warmest place in the house. We used to retreat into one room downstairs in the winter and not use the rest of the downstairs as it was just too bone achingly cold. It was rough in Northamptonshire...

Having just returned from a week at a course in a minor public school in the west of england where showers were on those handbasin 'buttons' so that one's washing was in twenty second intervals I have huge sympathy for your shower related woes, eminem

omega mum - loved your comment, could have come straight from the mouth of our very own Rilly - perhaps she may take you an as a consultant for her book projects ?
