Holy Moly

It seems at the moment that people are getting caught by the tide and requiring rescue from the Holy Island causeway just about every weekend.

That's despite clear signs at each side, warnings and lists of safe crossing times.

Do people think those signs are there for a joke? Do they think in their arrogance: "Ah, it won't happen to me" and simply plough on regardless - and then get stuck?

Each rescue costs a fortune - and most could probably be avoided if people had read and paid note to the signs.

I have had a marvellous idea to stop people getting stuck. Put a little hut at each end of the causeway with a member of staff requiring that everyone who crosses signs a disclaimer and agrees to pay for the cost of their rescue if they require one.

I bet that would stop the stupidity in one fell swoop.

Probably a large photo of a submerged car instead of the warning signs would do the trick M&M. People always think they can beat the water. Reminds me of the ford in Stanhope up in Weardale which is now closed in the winter because so many people try to cross when the river is in flood and get stuck.

get local vigilantes to shoot their tyres out, that'll stop em.

I fail to understand why they dont erect barriers. I have read it is bacause the islanders do not want them as they "understand the tides." Given the reported costs to teh RNLI (£30k in five years) I would have thought they would have insisted by now.

Are they getting stuck going on the Island or coming off? We have never ventured across to holy Island on our many trips to Northumberland, usually cos we have been worried we might get stranded

Hi M&M. Just been reading your Hotel California blog, but thought I had better leave my comment here.

Glad to see you are back, and lovely to read you again. I'm trying to pick my blog up when time allows and like you have checked back in again. Wonder if I'll ever leave? Hope you don't.

My brother's in-laws live on the island and he's always complaining about stupid people ignoring the tide schedule. The authorites should just impound their car (with them in it) and make them cough up the cost of the rescue before they release it - like they do when you get clamped.
Or they could invest in a digital sign telling people whether or not they can safely get over in time.

Hey - how about Bond submersible cars for rent either side of the causeway? They can ONLY cross when there is water? Nice way to make some dosh. Might scare the marine life though. Yes it's bleeding stupid what they do but don't get me started!

You could give them one of your "Paddington Bear hard stares"...that would work I bet...

Why don't the idiots just heed the sign that's there? I think they should leave them in the sanctuary box until the tide goes out and then make the buggers walk off the Island. That'll larn 'em, as they say in these parts.
