A little part of me …

... has gone. The rotten wisdom tooth at the top has ceased to be and a yawning chasm has taken its place. I am incomplete.

After spending all morning wobbling at the thought of the extraction, and being told by thoughtless colleagues how much having a wisdom tooth removed can hurt, I was pleasantly surprised by the relatively painlessness of the procedure. The injection hurt more than having the tooth pulled.

It’s the after-care that’s slightly worrying. I have a sheet of don’ts, aimed at preventing a fresh outbreak of bleeding or the onset of infection. They include not drinking anything alcoholic for 24 hours, avoiding rinsing the mouth for 12 hours and a ban on ‘excessive’ exercise.

“Can I ride my horse?” I asked the dentist.

“As long as you don’t fall off,” she said.

Famous last words…

I don't envy you one bit M&M. Dentists frighten me more than seeing a full manifestation. Amy's not too keen either after I became slightly hysterical the last time we went and the man with the golden drill pulled her front tooth out. Oooo, I cringe for you. Take care xx

You've been very brave. Did you get a sticker?

Did you chew on the inside of your cheek before the anaesthetic wore off? I always do that, and when the sensation comes back, the inside of my mouth is always shredded. What's this about no alcohol for 24 hours? Your dentist is obviously a complete sadist.

crikey M&M, sounds uncomfortable. I knew someone who woke up with a sore chest after such an extraction. It was where the dentist had placed his knee. Hope it all heals up soon and that no fags or booze for 24 hours does not make you wish you'd left the bloody thing in! take care now.

Do they remove the wisdom when they remove the tooth?

CJ, it was actaully so much more all right than I thought it was going to be ..

Mountainear, I didn't. The kid in front of me at reception at two. I feel swizzed now!

DM, I actually avoided the whole area of the cheek in case I made it bleed again!

Rilly, better out than in - the hole in the tooth was immense...

@themill, I'm not sure I have much wisdom to remove ...

Did the tooth fairy really come and how much did s/he leave? I would say a wisdom tooth is worth about the price of a bottle of Bombay Sapphire so treat yourself for being brave- surely 24 hours will be over soon?

How would falling off affect your mouth? - not that you will fall off, M&M.

Anyway, after going through what you've been through a bit of riding will be like, well, falling off a log - but don't - fall off a log, that is.

ergh. l had one out last year. damged it years ago when a horse's foot came in colision with my jaw = crown = eventual extraction. loads of salt water gargling, & a very alien mouth feel.

Well done. Very brave. Glad it wasn't as bad as expected. I'm quite sure I didn't wait 24 hours before drinking - but until the numbness wore off to avoid the drink spilling straight out again. There's a limit to what my children can bear.

How do you manage to drink anything, never mind booze, without rinsing it round your mouth? A little pipe from lips to gullet? Falling off a horse sounds much safer.

Gill, she didn't but I have bought myself a wee strawberry cream liquer (which will probably be sickly)

SAHD, not much I'm afraid ...

Debio, apparently it would be a bad idea if I feel off and bashed my face and started the empty hole bleeding again. However, I rode and didn't fall off. It's Ok to fall off again now though ...

Brom, I am, as we say up here git dead hard...

Muddyboots, I am hating the salt water as I hate the taste of salt!

OM, I can offically have a drink now ...

Mopsa, I held things in the opposite side of the mouth and gulped em down!
